The Great Sphinx

DAY 13, November 17 (Thursday) -- Cairo (Memphis, Saqqara, The Great Pyramids and The Sphinx)
On this morning, we will travel to Memphis and Saqqara. Memphis was the capital of Egypt during the Old Kingdom (ca. 2700-2180 BC), and Saqqara was used as a burial place for notable residents of Memphis, including kings, princes and nobles. From the ancient city of Memphis, we will travel a short distance to Saqqara, the ancient burial site. On the site, considered by many archaeologists to be one of the world's most important excavations, is the Step Pyramid, constructed by Imhotep in the 27th Century BC. The pyramid is part of the tomb complex of Zoser, the first Pharaoh of the Old Kingdom. In the afternoon, we will return to Cairo, to pay a visit to the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx. These Pharaonic monuments have come to symbolize Egypt's glory and mystery. The Great Pyramid of Cheops, constructed from over two million stone blocks, is 135m (443 feet) high! And The Sphinx was so named by the Greeks, because it resembled their mythical winged monster with a woman's head and lion's body. At the end of the day, we will return to the Sonesta Hotel & Casino for our second night (B/D).

DAY 14, November 18 (Friday) -- Cairo (Museum of Egyptian Antiquities and Coptic Cairo)
This morning will begin at the bustling Midan Tahrir, where the famous Museum of Egyptian Antiquities is located. We will spend the morning here seeing some of Egypt's most beloved treasures. Among the 100,000 pieces housed on the museum's two floors is the famous exhibit of Tutankhamun, whose tomb was discovered by Howard Carter, in 1922. The tomb and treasures of this young Pharaoh, modest by Pharaonic Egyptian standards, is perhaps the best preserved of the discovered tombs. We will also see archaeological relics from the Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, New Kingdom, and Greco-Roman periods. Our tour today will be led by our English-speaking guide, and there will be spare time available for you to explore the treasures on your own, if you wish. In the afternoon, we will drive through the neat, tree-lined streets of the Garden City area to Coptic Cairo, the center of Christianity in Cairo. There, we will walk the cobblestone streets and stop at a few of the churches, including that of Saint Sergius, which, in its present form, dates back to the 11th Century. This church is presumed to be the location where the Holy Family had lived during their flight into Egypt. In the evening, we will wrap up our trip by enjoying dinner on board a Nile cruise ship, with live entertainment. After dinner, we will return to the Sonesta Hotel & Casino for our final night (B/D).

DAY 15, November 19 (Saturday) -- Cairo/New York
Following breakfast, you will get to enjoy some free time, as we will have a late checkout from our hotel. In the afternoon, we will report to Cairo International Airport for our flight back home, bringing our memorable Pilgrimage to the Holy Land to a conclusion!
